As an example, the E-Standard tuning uses a 9.5-44 string set and the other tunings like D#-Standard, Drop-C, etc. will use heavier gauges tailored to match the total string tension of the 9.5-44 set (total tension = 108.5 lb.) while also closely matching the individual string tensions.
Matching the total tension on the different sets helps maintain the bridge level and neck relief the same when swapping tuning.
